Swastika (New Brilliant) Mine

(A monitoring location of the NM Abandoned Mine Land program project)

Javascript is required to view this map.

This coal mine site was established in 1919 and mined through 1954 by the St. Louis, Rocky Mountain, and Pacific Company. Many gob piles at the site are compromising water quality by eroding into the Dillon Creek stream channel, restricting lateral flow (and in turn increasing stream velocity and channel incision), and impacting chemistry including pH. The site is slated for restoration during the fall/summer of 2011. Reclamation will include stabilization of the gob piles, increased meandering of the stream channel, improved riparian vegetation cover, and rehabilitation of wetland areas.
